Laser Hair Removal
Strong summer sun can make or break your laser results. The rule of thumb is simple: keep UV off treated skin before and after sessions to lower the risk of burns and pigmentation 💗.
Why does summer sun make laser riskier?
Laser targets pigment in the hair follicle. When your skin is recently tanned, there is more surface pigment competing for that light. That extra pigment absorbs heat too, which can raise the chance of redness, blistering or post-inflammatory pigmentation.
Skin that is already warm or irritated from sun can also be more reactive. Add another heat-based procedure on top and the risk goes up. At love💗epil we patch test and tailor settings to your skin tone and hair, but good sun discipline is still the best safety net.
How long should I avoid sun before and after a session?
- Before: stay clear of direct sun and sunbeds for at least 14 days. If you tan easily or have had strong sun, extend to 3-4 weeks. Avoid self-tan on the area for 7-10 days and exfoliate gently to remove any residue.
- After: protect the area from direct sun for 14 days. If exposure is unavoidable, cover up and use high-protection sunscreen. In peak UV or on holiday, aim for 3-4 weeks of extra care.
A practical rule: if the skin on the area looks a shade darker than usual or shows fresh tan lines, reschedule. Planning a beach break? Book sessions either well before you go, or at least 2 weeks after you return, once any tan has settled.

What should I do to prevent burns and pigmentation?
Think of it in three stages - before, on the day, and after.
Before your appointment
- Use a broad-spectrum SPF 50 daily on the area for 2 weeks, reapplying every 2 hours if you are outdoors.
- Pause retinoids and acids on the area for 3-5 days to reduce sensitivity.
- Check medicines that can increase light sensitivity, such as some antibiotics. Bring details to your patch test so we can advise.
- Shave 24 hours before. Arrive with clean, product-free skin.
On the day
- Wear loose clothing that covers the treated area so you can leave the studio protected.
- Skip deodorant, perfume, oils and makeup on the area.
- Keep the skin cool - no hot yoga or long sunny walks right after.
Aftercare for the first 48-72 hours
- Stay in the shade and use SPF 50 on exposed areas. Reapply generously and often.
- Avoid heat and friction: hot baths, saunas, steam rooms and intense workouts.
- Soothe with a cool compress or a light, fragrance-free gel moisturiser.
- Do not exfoliate or pick. If you use active skincare, wait 3-5 days before restarting on the area.
- If redness lasts beyond 48 hours or you notice blistering, contact your clinician promptly.
