Laser Hair Removal

Just had facial laser hair removal on your face? Here is exactly how to calm redness, avoid irritation, and protect your results in the next two weeks.

First 48 hours: calm the skin and protect the barrier

Most people notice mild warmth or redness that settles within a few hours. Keep your routine ultra gentle:

  • Apply cool compresses in short intervals to reduce heat and puffiness.
  • Cleanse with a fragrance-free gel or cream and lukewarm water. Pat dry, do not rub.
  • Use a simple moisturiser with ceramides or hyaluronic acid. Skip essential oils and strong fragrances.
  • Wear broad-spectrum SPF 50 every day, ideally a mineral formula with zinc oxide. Reapply if you are outdoors.
  • Avoid active ingredients for now: no retinoids, AHAs/BHAs, vitamin C serums, scrubs or peels.
  • Skip makeup for 24 hours. If you must, choose clean mineral makeup and remove it very gently at night.
  • Avoid heat and sweat: no hot showers, saunas, steam rooms, hot yoga, gym or swimming.
  • Do not wax, thread or tweeze the treated area. Shaving can wait 48-72 hours if the skin feels calm.
  • Keep hands off your face and change to a clean pillowcase.

Days 3 to 14: support shedding and prevent ingrowns

Treated hairs often shed over 7-14 days and can look like tiny pepper dots before they fall out. Help the process without stressing the skin:

  • Start very gentle exfoliation around day 3-5 if there is no irritation. Use a soft washcloth or a mild PHA/lactic toner 1-2 times weekly. Do not scrub.
  • Keep moisturiser twice daily to maintain a healthy barrier and reduce tightness.
  • Continue daily SPF 50 and limit direct sun for at least 2 weeks. A hat and shade make a real difference.
  • If you need to shave, use light pressure, a fresh razor and a soothing gel or cream.
  • Reintroduce actives slowly after day 4-5 only if the skin feels normal. Start every other night and pause if you feel stingy or tight.
  • Between sessions, avoid waxing, threading and tweezing. These remove the hair root and can reduce laser effectiveness.

Avoid pigmentation and post-treatment breakouts

Protecting against pigment change and clogged pores is mostly about consistency, not complexity.

  • Sun is the main trigger for post-laser pigmentation. Use SPF 50 daily, reapply outdoors, and avoid sunbeds completely.
  • Choose non-comedogenic moisturisers and remove sunscreen and makeup thoroughly each night with a gentle cleanse.
  • Keep tools clean: wash makeup brushes and change pillowcases more often in the first week.
  • For congestion-prone skin, consider niacinamide or azelaic acid after day 3-5. They are generally well tolerated and can help calm redness and uneven tone.
