Natural does not always mean gentle after laser

Laser energy heats the hair follicle, which leaves the skin warm, sensitised and a bit inflamed for a short time. Plant extracts and essential oils are concentrated chemical cocktails. On robust skin they might be fine, but on freshly treated skin they often sting, redden or prolong downtime.

High-reactivity ingredients to avoid in the first week

Skip these until the skin has fully settled and there is no visible redness or heat:

  • Essential oils and oil blends: tea tree, lavender, citrus and mint oils are common triggers.
  • Acids: AHAs like glycolic or lactic, BHAs like salicylic, and even gentle PHAs can bite on sensitised skin.
  • Retinoids: retinol, retinal and prescription retinoids increase cell turnover and can compound irritation.
  • Fragrance and parfum, including “natural” perfume: common allergens such as linalool and limonene.
  • Drying alcohols: alcohol denat, SD alcohol and strong astringents like some witch hazel toners.

If a formula lists several plant extracts plus parfum, treat it as high risk immediately after treatment.

A simple timeline to bring back your actives

Day 0 to 48 hours

  • Cleanse with lukewarm water and a mild, fragrance-free gel. No scrubs, loofahs or hot showers.
  • Soothe with a cool compress and a light, fragrance-free moisturiser. Look for ceramides, glycerin, hyaluronic acid or squalane. Panthenol can help calm.
  • Protect from heat, tight clothing and workouts. If the area is exposed, use a mineral SPF 30 to 50 with zinc oxide.
  • Avoid deodorant, self-tan, pools and saunas on treated areas.

Days 3 to 5

  • If redness has resolved, continue the gentle routine. You can add low-strength niacinamide if you usually tolerate it.
  • Still avoid essential oils, acids, retinoids, fragranced mists and alcohol-heavy toners.
  • You may shave regrowth if advised for your treatment plan, but do not wax, pluck or thread.

Days 7 to 10

  • Reintroduce mild acids cautiously if the skin looks and feels normal. Start once a week with a low-strength lactic or PHA product, patch test first.
  • Keep fragrance-free and avoid essential oils around the area for the full week.

Days 10 to 14

  • Consider restarting retinoids slowly, for example every third night, watching for any rebound redness.
  • Resume your usual routine only when the skin is fully calm.
