Laser Hair Removal
Worried laser hair removal might aggravate psoriasis or reactive skin? You can often have safe, effective treatment on calm, intact skin, but timing and technique matter. The non-negotiable rule: do not laser over active plaques, broken skin or a fresh flare-up.
Is laser hair removal safe with psoriasis or very sensitive skin?
Often, yes - if the skin in the treatment area is clear and stable. The risk with psoriasis is the Koebner effect, where trauma can trigger new plaques. A controlled test patch and conservative settings help manage this risk. Many clients also choose laser to cut down shaving and waxing, which can cause micro-cuts and friction that set off irritation.
Expect normal, short-lived reactions: pinkness or darkening in the area depending on your skin tone, mild warmth, and occasionally dry or itchy skin for a day or two. These are common skin responses after light-based treatments and usually settle with simple aftercare.
If your goal is fewer ingrowns and smoother regrowth with less day-to-day irritation, laser can help reduce hair growth over a course of sessions. For a clear overview of how treatment works at our studios, see learn more.
When should you postpone or avoid a session?
Pause treatment and speak to a practitioner if any of the below apply to the area being treated:
- Active psoriasis plaques, open cracks, infection, weeping or significant inflammation
- Sunburn, recent tanning or fake tan
- Recent waxing, threading or epilating in the last 3-4 weeks
- Current photosensitising medicines, recent isotretinoin use, or strong topical retinoids on the area
- Pregnancy or breastfeeding if you prefer to wait, as many clinics do not treat then
- Recent chemical peels, microneedling or laser procedures on the same area
Topical steroids are not an absolute stop, but let your practitioner know. Thinner, fragile skin may need gentler settings and longer gaps between sessions.
How should you prepare, and what should you ask in advance?
Good preparation reduces flare risk and improves comfort:
- Keep skin calm for 1-2 weeks before treatment. Moisturise daily with a fragrance-free emollient.
- Stop exfoliants, scrubs, retinoids and acids on the area for at least 3-5 days pre-treatment.
- Shave 12-24 hours before your appointment so hair is at skin level. Do not wax or tweeze between sessions.
- Arrive with clean, product-free skin. Skip deodorant, perfumes and oils on the day.
- Share your psoriasis pattern, triggers and medication list. Bring photos if your condition fluctuates.
Ask for:
- A test patch on clear skin, ideally 48 hours before your first full session.
- Cooling measures and conservative energy settings to start, increasing only if your skin tolerates well.
- Device choice that suits your skin tone and hair, for example Nd:YAG for deeper skin tones to lower pigmentation risk.
If your psoriasis is moderate to severe, or you are on systemic treatments, book a personalised review to plan timing and settings safely via book a consultation.
Aftercare to reduce redness, itch and flares
- Cool the area with a clean cold pack in short intervals for the first few hours.
- Use a simple, fragrance-free moisturiser or gel for 2-3 days. Avoid fragranced body products.
- Skip hot showers, saunas, intense workouts and tight clothing for 24-48 hours.
- Do not pick or scratch. If itch appears, moisturise and cool rather than rub.
- Avoid exfoliants, retinoids and acids for 3-5 days. Resume gently if skin stays calm.
- Protect from sun exposure and use SPF 30-50 daily.
- Watch for unusual signs like blistering, pronounced swelling or a widespread psoriasis flare. Contact your practitioner or GP if this happens, and pause further sessions until settled.
Handled thoughtfully, laser can reduce the friction and nicks that often aggravate sensitive skin, helping you feel comfortable day to day 💗.
